What is a Material Transfer Agreement?
A Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) is a document that can be used when a researcher wants to either send materials to an outside party or receive materials from an outside party. MTAs define the rights and responsibilities of both the providing and receiving party regarding issues such as permitted use, ownership, publication, intellectual property, and liability.
All incoming and outgoing MTAs must be evaluated and signed by an authorized representative from the Technology Commercialization Office. Even if you have been provided a signature line, you can’t sign.
What is the process for having an MTA signed at OSU?
- Complete the MTA-CDA questionnaire.
- Once you have submitted the questionnaire, an MTA Specialist will be assigned to review the MTA and will work directly with the Other Party.
- Sometimes, negotiation of the MTA is required, so that it will comply with Ohio law, federal law, and OSU policy.
- The MTA Specialist will keep you in the loop, with status updates or by cc’ing you on correspondence.
- Once the MTA has been signed by both parties, you will be sent a fully executed copy for your records.
- Please read the fully executed agreement carefully, comply with its terms, and keep within the scope of the MTA.
- At this point, you may receive or send the materials.
